The Guest of Honour for this Association Lunch will be Mr Rupert Ainley, OBE.
A Mandarin-speaking career diplomat, Rupert has recently been appointed to a prominent role overseeing Hong Kong and this represents a rare opportunity to hear directly from one of the most senior diplomats involved in Hong Kong affairs how the Foreign & Commonwealth Office views the complexities of the situation in Hong Kong.
Rupert is currently Joint Head of China Department (Hong Kong) and has previously served as Additional Director in the UK Foreign Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Rupert was last posted to Beijing leading the UK’s network of energy and climate change attaches across China. He took up that position after studying Mandarin at Nanjing University. Rupert has worked in a number of roles across Government, including EU external affairs, conflict resolution, security and defence policy, and on the Middle East. Rupert has also spent time on secondment to the European Commission.
Rupert will speak for 10-15 minutes and there will be the opportunity to ask questions.

The Guest of Honour for this Association Lunch will be Mr Paul Chan, Hong Kong’s Financial Secretary.
Before his appointment as Financial Secretary on 16 January 2017, Mr Chan served as Secretary for Development of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government from July 2012 to January 2017.
Prior to joining the Government, Mr Chan held a number of public service positions including member of the Legislative Council; Chairman of Legal Aid Services Council; Board Member of the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority; non-official member of the Strategic Development Commission and Council Member of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Mr Chan is a Certified Public Accountant. He is a former President of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants and a former Chairman of The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, Hong Kong.
Mr Chan will speak for 10-15 minutes and there will be the opportunity to ask questions.

This annual early evening seminar is designed to provide an authoritative and up to date picture of the current business scene in Hong Kong, with a particular focus on opportunities for UK business, both in Hong Kong itself, and in the wider region. Delivered, as they will be, by the most senior and experienced officials involved, the initial speeches will have authority and, as the session will be off the record, they will also provide in-depth perceptions of how things stand. The ensuing panel discussion will be with an SME already established in HK and also a company starting up there. The final part of the seminar will give attendees ample chance to ask questions and seek guidance. Thanks to the kindness and generosity of Mayer Brown, the event will conclude with drinks and a good chance to talk further with those involved.
The Hong Kong Association, the China-Britain Business Council, the British Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and InvestHK will also provide authoritative assessment how Hong Kong business sits with mainland China and the wider region.
The evening is being very generously hosted by Mayer Brown LLP: attendees will be asked to arrive by 6.15 pm so that the seminar can start promptly at 6.30pm. Drinks will be served from 7.45 pm to 8.30 pm.

The Guest of Honour for this Association Lunch will be Hong Kong’s Chief Justice. He is the head of the Judiciary in Hong Kong and presides in the Court of Final Appeal.
Chief Justice Ma was admitted to the Hong Kong Bar in 1980, having been called to the English Bar in 1978. He was appointed a QC in 1993. He became a Judge in the Court of First Instance in 2001, a Justice of Appeal in 2002 and the Chief Judge of the High Court in 2003. He was appointed the Chief Justice on 1 September 2010.
The relationship between the Judiciary in Hong Kong and its opposite numbers in the UK, as with other common law jurisdictions, remains close. The Chief Justice will discuss this relationship, its future and also the relationship with the Mainland judiciary.
It will also be particularly relevant to hear any views on the robustness of the rule of law in Hong Kong, faced as it is with a variety of challenges.

The Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs

The Guest of Honour for the Association’s New Year lunch will be the Foreign Secretary the Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP.
Jeremy Hunt was appointed Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs on 9 July 2018. He was elected Conservative MP for South West Surrey in May 2005.
He served as Secretary of State for Health and Social Care from 8 January 2018 to 9 July 2018 and was first appointed Secretary of State for Health in September 2012.
In May 2010 Jeremy was appointed Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport. He was formerly Shadow Culture Secretary 2007 to 2010 and Shadow Minister for Disabled People 2005 to 2007.
Before his election as an MP, Jeremy ran his own educational publishing business, Hotcourses. He also set up a charity to help AIDS orphans in Africa in which he continues to play an active role.
Jeremy studied at Oxford University, where he graduated with a first class honours degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics.
