THE ORIENTAL CLUB
The Oriental Club has extended their offer to waive the entrance fee for 2020, for applications for membership by bona fide members of the Hong Kong Society, whose applications for membership have to be submitted through the HK Society and endorsed by its Chairman.
Members applying must have been a member of the HK Society for at least two years and undertake to remain as a member of the HK Society for a further 2 years (by paying an upfront fee for the additional 2 years membership) and have met with a member of the HKS Committee.
Other rules for entrance (see the Club’s website at www.orientalclub.org.uk) remain as laid down and the annual subscriptions are no different from those of other members of the Club. As the entrance fee is currently £1,500 this offer is immensely generous.
For nearly two hundred years, the Oriental Club has been an iconic Central London focal point for those returning from India and the East and for local members who value the amenities and service offered by Club staff and its home, the impressive Stratford House.
Situated in a quiet cul-de-sac in a convenient Central London location, close to Bond Street and within easy reach of Canary Wharf and the City, the Oriental Club is ideally placed for meeting friends and colleagues for business, an evening out, or simply time-out from a busy day. The Club has meeting rooms and an IT Suite, spacious Drawing Rooms for relaxing, a Members’ Bar, Billiards Room and an elegant Dining Room. There are also Private Dining rooms for hosting events and forty well-appointed bedrooms.
The Oriental Club treasures its rich history and the extraordinary characters who have been associated with the Club, since the Duke of Wellington founded the Club as the first and only President.
Today, the Club is looking ahead to the current and future needs of its members. There is a vibrant programme of social events and different Societies to join. Eight new bedrooms have been added and there is now a Michelin-rated Executive Chef in the Kitchen.
For more information, see the club’s website www.orientalclub.org.uk.
The Hong Kong Society has used the Club increasingly in recent years and has always been made to feel very welcome. It is justifiably known as being cosy, comfortable and efficient; the staff are very nice. Two of its great advantages are its proximity to good communications (Bond St Station is two minutes walk) and its excellent bedrooms. The Club’s Executive Chef, Wesley Smalley, has the very highest credentials and a passion for delicious food created from fresh, seasonal ingredients. Members can choose to dine in the Calcutta Light Horse Bar or the Dining Room. The Drawing Rooms also serve a range of sandwiches, cakes and afternoon tea. The Club is famous for its wide range of Curries which are very popular with Members and their guests.
A number of well-known and regular visitors from Hong Kong use the Club and the connections are strong. There are numerous Reciprocal Clubs that members can use when they travel including the Hong Kong Club.
